Membership Process

The Membership Committee rules for consideration of new members require that three (3) letters be written for a candidate; a proposing letter, a seconding letter and a supporting letter.  (The Statement in Support of a Candidate for Admission to Membership form may be used in place of letters for the seconding and supporting letters). Only adult members in good standing who are not in a candidate's immediate family or members of the Membership Committee may write such letters.

The proposer of a candidate is responsible for collecting the application and the letters and forwarding them to the Membership Chairperson at the Club. The proposer will later be notified about the arrangements for having the candidate meet with the Committee.

After a complete application has been received, the candidate's name will be posted on the Club bulletin board for a period of two weeks. Club members may write letters to the Membership Committee concerning the proposed candidate. Such letters will be kept completely confidential. If three or more letters of objection are received about a candidate, and the Committee is satisfied that they are well founded, the candidate's name will be dropped and cannot be brought before the Committee again for at least twelve months.

Following the posting period, the proposer should be prepared to invite the candidate to meet the Membership Committee at a time designated by the Membership Chairperson.

The Membership Committee requests that letters in support of the candidate be as complete and informative as possible. Suggestions for writing such letters follow:

  1. Include candidate's and partner’s full name.

  2. Tell number of skating privileges desired and general interest in skating.

  3. Tell how long you have known the candidate (and family if applicable).

  4. Tell whether candidate is a personal friend, a business friend, or both.

  5. Tell how often you have seen or been with the candidate during the last five years.

  6. Tell whether you believe, to the best of your knowledge, that the candidate's friends would be comfortable at the Club.

  7. An appraisal of the candidate's financial responsibility would be appreciated.

  8. The Committee needs to know whether or not you feel that the candidate and family are unquestionably qualified for membership.

These suggestions are given to help proposers and others writing letters for candidates; other information can certainly be included. All communications regarding proposals for membership should be addressed to the Chairperson of the Membership Committee at the Club and will be kept confidential.

The Membership Committee welcomes information and applications as it works to bring new and vital members to the Club.
